If your American then you will surely be familiar with the 'Tales from the Crypt' TV horror show that no doubt kept you shivering under the bed clothes when you were probably too young to be watching in the first place. The rest of the world had their chance to see this now classic scarefest, turning it into a truly global horror experience much like 'Big Brother' is to this very day. With an already established fan base, it made perfect sense to turn the TV show into a feature length horror film complete with sexy vampires, corny wise cracking detectives and ...err...the not very cute anymore, Corey Feldman.
The story involves a lonely mansion house on the edge of town that attracts the male population like fly's to pooh. The reason for this is obvious, a group of gorgeous vampires eating their way through the men folk. Of course the guys don't know about the ladies lust for more than a little slap and tickle until it's too late and by the time they do realise, they find it hard escaping with their pants around their ankles. When Katherine's (Eleniak) brother, Caleb (Feldman) disappears she hires a bumbling private detective to hunt him down leading to a confrontation with the head Vampire (Everhart).
The cast in general is just about spot on with a fabulously dry and sarcastic performance by Dennis Miller as the sleazy yet likable Detective who never misses a chance to crack a joke and manages to some how do the right thing even when the chips are down. The evilest vampire of the whore house is played by the lovely Angie Everhart and the butter-wouldn't-melt, church going goody goody is played to perfection by the angelic Ex Baywatch babe Erika Eleniak. After literally exploding onto the movie scene with the best footage involving a birthday cake I've ever seen ('Under Siege'), not much has been heard from Erika over the last few years and while the other more famous (or is that infamous) Baywatch babe stared in her own big budget, high profile action movie in 1996 ('Barb Wire'), it seems that, for now, our Erika has shunned her horror and action roles in pursuit of more 'serious' work.
Gilbert Adler's Production efforts on the countless 'Tales from the Crypt' TV episodes certainly put him ahead of the competition when it came to looking for the right stuff to direct a movie based on the terrestrial show, and so Adler got Producer and Directing credit much to his merit. Adler's genre loyalty has placed him in good stead with a string of headlining Producing roles including the 1999 William Castle remake of 'House on Haunted Hill', 'Thir13en Ghosts', 'Ghost Ship', 'Starsky and Hutch' and the DC/Vertigo Hellblazer comic book based 'Constantine'.
Bordello of Blood is, above anything else, good fun to watch with a great mix of gory effects, good old fashioned monster makeup and larger than life characters that you can love and hate in a kind of pantomime way. It isn't a horror film that will have you jumping out of your seat with fright but instead appeals to fans of goofy latex monsters, campy acting and a little naked flesh thrown in for balance. It won't appeal to every one especially up against harder core horror movies such as 'The Ring' and '28 Days Latter', but for a simple chuckle it's worth a watch.
