COLD BLONDED MURDERS / IRISH WHISKY (2003)
This duel billed DVD of independent short's has two very capable little movies that are both pleasingly paced with a good mix of interesting characters and situations. Both stories have their feet firmly set in the horror genre but differ with the first being a serial killer yarn and the second telling the tale of a revengeful ghost.
In 'Cold Blonded Murders', Chad and Abby find that they have a sexy new neighbour who appears to be a perfect lady. When Isha, the new neighbour down the stairs, starts to make eye's at Chad her true motives begin to surface with deadly results. Cold Blonded is a pretty
basic yet entertaining story that offers up very little originality but manages to execute it's serial killer theme very effectively with the inclusion of a little violence and gore to heighten the impact. The film opens and closes with a nice radio broadcast that eases the viewer into the
story without any unnecessary time wasting and allows for the evil doing's to start within the first few minutes. The show is stolen however by the stunning Suzi Lorraine who makes for quite a convincing femme fatale, gritting her teeth, screaming at her victims and slicing them up like baloney. It's always' great to see a nice girl gone bad.
Irish Whisky is a much stranger and less straight forward offering from the same director as Cold Blonded Murders, this time touching upon the paranormal and a revengeful spirit. The story focuses on the
assistant to a greedy businessman who, through his love of the mighty dollar, ends up being punished for the death of a group of sailors. This movie is surprisingly good considering that it was shot in a mere 16 hours and had to be completely re-dubbed
due to onset audio problems, but this is
what hardcore indie film making is all about and the end result is quite a capable effort.
The DVD contains a whole host of trailers for forth coming releases but before you discard the extra features on this disc as being nothing more than a poor collection of advertisements, look closely and you will find a bonus short called 'Bea Vra!' which is homage to the b-movie era where the effects were done in camera and the acting was as wooden as woody woodpeckers woody. Great fun and a nice freebie to accompany what has to rate as a pretty good value package. Well done guy's.
