SHORT CUT ROAD (2003)
Another in a long stream of independent horror films that is set amongst the secluded surroundings of backwoods America, this wretched little movie brings nothing to an already over crowded sub genre of dumb teens and psycho killers. Opening on a long lonely stretch of highway we get our first taste of the true horror that lies ahead, poor lighting, grainy imagery and a truly horrible sound mix. The first 5 minutes does offer an opportunity to forget the technical flaws (this is independent cinema after all) with an increase in tension that, whilst never peaking wildly, does encourage the viewer to persist just that little bit longer, but unfortunately ends up a wasted opportunity as the story spirals into another predictable plod.

The story line follows a group of teens who hit the open road with one aim in mind, to party hard at the Rock Stock music festival. When two of the group fail to show, the remaining party goers decide that they must have changed their plans and forget about them. After the festival they head off home but the car breaks down........you can guess the rest.

Along with the other hundred odd 'slasher-in-the-woods' type movies, comparisons could be drawn between this film and 'Wrong Turn' or 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' but perhaps it has most in common with 'The Blair Witch Project' thanks in no small part to the poor technical's involved in the shooting of this movie, but where as 'The Blair Witch Project' used the shaky camera and documentary style footage to enhance the reality of the situation, here it just looks as though the team are either drunk, inexperienced or both.

Just for a laugh, if you get your hands on this shocker then forget the main film and skip to the police officers reaction scene at the end of the film. His over acting on the discovery of a particular crime scene will have you wetting your pants for all the wrong reasons.

Highs
The best line of the film is the moment our horny girl finishes giving her boyfriend a blow job and immediately takes a slug of her beer saying after "Wow, that's one salty beer".

Lows
Sound balance especially in the festival scene is so bad you can't understand a whole section of the dialogue. The lighting is poor, there are focusing problems as well as some silly continuity issues.
