Plot
Set eight years on from where we last left off. The Islands prehistoric inhabitants still exist and are thriving. The islands are poorly guarded and tourists want to be in on the action. Young Eric Kirby gets stranded on the island after a freak paragliding incident whilst trying to see some dinosaurs. Alan Grant, unaware of this event, is conned by Paul Kirby to perform a low flight over isolated Isla Sorna, where InGen's second research site was located. Due to Alan Grants current financial situation he gives in to Kirbys request, agreeing to one fly over to enable the tourists to take photos. But they land against Grants wishes and Grant learns the Kirby's have a hidden agenda.

Analysis
Well it was back in 1993 when Steven Speilberg brought us the first Jurassic Park. I sat in the theater and watched in awe at the dinosaurs on the big screen. I recall that during Jurassic Park the total time that dinosaurs were on screen was only around 8 minutes. But the world just went dinosaur mad and the cinemas were sold out for weeks. Then came Jurassic Park The Lost World that left me somewhat disappointed. Now some 8 years after the original movie, technology has advanced so much that we are used to such impressive effects. This is probably one of the major down sides to Jurassic Park 3. We are now just so used to such grand effects that the wonder and shock factor is just not as strong.

Jurassic Park 3 sees Joe Johnston take the reigns from Speilberg as director. Johnston has an uphill battle with the success of this third installment, and has a lot of ground to make up after the flop of the second film. However, as dinosaur films go its not all bad. From an audience point of view the dinosaurs are seamless and you just can't fault them. I think everyone is sold 100% on them. So why are we shown for the first several minutes of the film Eric Kirby and his Uncle paragliding next to the island in such a poor way. With all the money spent on the dinosaur's, maybe they couldn't afford to make the close ups against the blue screen look at least half-believable. It did seem a shame and I had not seen such poor footage in a long time.

The characters all leave a lot to be desired. Rather than taking each character individually I will review them as a whole. Its hard to believe how stupid the characters are made to look as they move across the island making much noise, taking eggs and generally attracting dinosaurs like theirs no tomorrow. It gets to the point that the cast are there to run from point a to point without being mauled or eaten. We then move to the next scene and again they run trying to avoiding being dinosaur food. This is probably the majority plot for the entire movie.

As the film is brought to a close I can honestly say that I blame the writers as we are treated to one of the poorest, most unbelievable endings I have ever seen to a film. Surely they would have just been ripped to pieces during the concluding events. Oh how I wish. I did love the amusing mobile phone joke that ran through part of the film. I also thought the contrast of Alan Grant calling Ellie Degler on his satellite phone whilst he fights to survive during a dinosaur attack, to have his call answered by her young son who is watching and singing along to Barney, was great.

I would go as far as to say that, although this movie has many weaknesses, it's still very watchable and enjoyable. Leave your cares outside and don't expect too much as it will be an enjoyable view. The awe factor may be lost but imagine you hadn't seen the first two and you would be bowled over. Dinosaurs throughout and at last, the introduction of flight.

Key Area Rating (out of 5)  Comment
Action
Just how much escaping from dinosaurs can you take.
Thrills/
Tension
Boy that dinosaur is big, time to run again. Just excludes the fear factor, a major point that should not be missing from this type of movie.
Violence/
Gore
A few people are eaten alive. But the body counts not that high. To do the film justice it needs to be 5.
Bare Flesh
NONE
The dinosaurs are not wearing anything but that's your lot!
Plot
Any excuse to get some of the characters back on the island! Yes, well lets bleed this mother dry.

Verdict
I did think the sets were very well designed and the scenes and location superb. The dinosaurs were faultless. So why make the characters so stupid and end the film so poorly? Why oh why oh why. The film had the potential and budget to be outstanding but just did not live up to my expectations.

Another over ripe Dinosaur movie.

Facts, figures and boobs

1.  During the studio introduction, each logo is accompanied by the 'ripple-in-the-water' effect and the sound of a heavy footstep.
2.  After the brief encounter with the ceratosaurus, which turns its nose up at the humans and decides not to attack them, Paul Kirby (William H. Macy) says "Can't help but feel a little offended." The line was edited out for it was thought that it was inappropriately "cheesey" for that stage in the narrative.

What other people thought of this film: -
