Plot
After an asteroid collides with the moon, bringing it into a closer orbit around the Earth, thousands of people begin to turn into werewolves. Jake, a virtual prisoner in the escape proof New York City of 2010, was unfortunately a lycanthrope BEFORE the disaster occurred and as a result, can now change at will. His estranged brother LAZLO, who is the unspoken ruler of the mostly lawless city, wants to throw a revolt and unite all the 'wolves together to destroy humanity…and wants to drag his reluctant brother into his megalomaniacal plans for world domination…

Analysis
When a low-budget flick with the title of 'Rage of the Werewolf:AKA Planet of the Werewolves' drops through your door, how do you react? Some people would laugh heartily and throw it to one side, some would run out of the house screaming that the apocalypse had finally begun and others like me would consider taking a sick day off work so that I can ram it into the VCR and check it out. I the end though I decided to smell the coffee and go to work and catch the movie when I returned.

Rage of the werewolf is just one of a series of wolf movies to come from director Kevin Lindenmuth via his Brimstone production company. Now I just want to make one thing clear before we go down this road any further, remember that this is not a high budget Hollywood blockbuster, it is a piece of work that has attempted to squeeze every drop of creativity out of what budget it does have. So when the movie opens with computer graphics that depict an asteroid speeding toward earth only to be headed off by a bunch of nuclear warheads, some might say "errmm that was a little poor". Look at it closer and remember that this is a low budget flick and now think again. Well to me it opens on a high note with a valiant attempt to build what, might seem like a silly yarn, into a plausible pitch.

As the story progresses onwards we are introduced to a number of action sequences that involve various werewolves and underground freaks. These scenes usually involve set fight pieces between the characters and can be summed up in three words:- Down, Right and Funny. I don't intend the word 'funny' to be an insult, as our own main page states "Good action sequences (If not good, then at least funny)".

The creature makeup was a high point with a special mention going to the werewolf effects. The appliances that Santo Marotta wears for his half-transformation scenes are very well executed and utilise contact lenses and false teeth excellently.

The one thing that stopped me loving this movie was the one criticism that I can safely lay on a few other films I have seen recently, and that is the sound level. Through out the movie the dialogue just seems to vanish amongst the background noise and really did upset the flow of the story. Mostly this effected the outdoor locations and so did not ruin the whole experience but it is something that I feel needs to be carefully monitored for future presentations.

The climax is a little too 'man in a monkey suit' for my liking and can say that it's saving grace was the presence of the sultry and always reliable Debbie Rochon.

Key Area Rating (out of 5)  Comment
Action
It's good to see action scenes in any film and this one certainly makes an attempt to keep the fighting fast and furious. The only trouble is that they are a little too fast and become some what confusing. Still a good laugh though!!
Thrills/
Tension
Not a lot of tension but displayed the odd thrilling moment including the section when Jake and Ralph enter the subterranean tunnel.
Violence/
Gore
The make-up effects are very effective and although the film does not go OTT with the red stuff there's still room in there for a good old heart ripping, throat tearing and leg pulling (as in pulling off).
Bare Flesh
NONE
Unusual for a low-budget flick not to have skin, but you can live without it you know.
Plot
The asteroid idea is by no means a new one, but when it collides with the moon and pushes it closer to earth, well I don't recall seeing that one before. The pacing of the film is very good and I found that just at the point of loosing my attention something would happen to keep me glued.

Verdict
Rage of the Werewolf was an enjoyable flick to watch and I found that it succeeded in producing a film that echoes some of the magic the old black and white monster movies used to. Some slight niggles regarding the sound and the hooky ending, but well worth catching next time you have a spare ninety minutes.

B Movie nuttiness.
